Catalog > Cloth Diapers ![]() What are the different kinds of diapers? To use cloth diapers you will need
something absorbent and something waterproof. The most economical and
flexible solution is two separate pieces each with their own
function. While the shapes can be the same, it is the fabric material
that determines whether the item is a diaper, cover etc. See our Cloth Diaper Dictionary for more details on different styles. DiapersThe absorbent part is generally called the diaper and the two most common styles are the prefold and the the fitted diaper. Diapers are generally made of cotton but other absorbent materials such as hemp, bamboo and synthetic microfiber are also used.
Prefold diapers have been around for
many years and they are still the most economical and adjustable
system. They are rectangles of absorbent fabric that are folded and
sometimes fastened to fit the baby. These come in different sizes and
levels of absorbency. Infant size is most commonly used up to 15 lbs.
and premium size is used after that. Standard is the same size as
premium but with fewer layers. Usually cotton, but also available in hemp and bamboo. Beware of chain store diapers; they are usually very thin and not as absorbent as "diaper service quality". Best number of layers is 4x8x4. Fitted diapers are shaped to fit the
baby and usually have snaps or hook & loop fasteners. These do
not require folding and are generally considered easy to use. This style of cloth diapers is very good at containing messes, especially with newborn babies.
They come in sizes from newborn to toddler as well as one size options. MY PERSONAL FAVORITE STYLE No leaks. Ever. Diaper Covers
The waterproof outer piece is called the cover, wrap or soaker and can be made of polyester, nylon or wool. Avoid vinyl covers, pvc, eva or any kind of "rubber pants" or "plastic pants" as they do not last long and are not as breathable as other materials. The newer polyurathane laminates (PUL) are so much better and not that much more expensive if you shop carefully. The laminate can be applied to many types of fabric, giving it a durable water repellent surface. The cover
protects clothing, furniture, car seats and strollers. You can skip
the cover around the house as desired. This is excellent for airing
out the skin. Covers have fasteners like snaps or hook & loop and
come in sizes from newborn to toddler or in a one-size option that fits most babies. Be aware that a "one size" cover may not fit a newborn until at least 10 lbs. and will be more bulky from the fold down front, and possibly more prone to leaks than a sized cover. A newborn size cover is ALWAYS the best for a new baby but after 10lbs., most one size products are a good investment and are not prone to excess leakage. I had a 10lb. 6oz. newborn myself so it really depends on your baby.
All in one Diapers & Pocket Diapers
An AIO diaper has the absorbent
piece attached to the waterproof material. No separate cover is
needed. Very easy to use, but are more expensive. Pocket diapers are like a two-layer cover
and the absorbent diaper insert is added to a pocket opening. Once the
pieces are assembled, it is used like an all in one diaper. Both of these styles come in sized (the most trim fitting option) and one size with less chance of needing to buy multiple sizes.
Other styles include contour diapers (a blend of prefold and fitted), flats (traditional single layer squares), and hybrid pocket/aio. For best results with all diapers, change your baby every time they go. See our night time selections for diapers and accessories for when you can't change as often. How many? Figure 1 dozen per child per day. So 24 diapers (any combination) will mean washing every other day. An older child may need 6-9 diapers per day. Looking for more cloth diapers? Everyone likes to know who they're buying from! My name is Heather and together with my husband, Shannon, we own and operate ClothDiaperOutlet and Knickernappies from our home in Oregon. Our story starts in 2005. My husband and I were running a brick & mortar bookstore together when we had our first child. From the very beginning, we fought diaper rash. I tried everything but nothing helped. When she was about 7 weeks old, someone online convinced me to try cloth diapers. With a great deal of skepticism and desperation, I bought two to try. When they arrived in the mail, I was shocked at how soft they were, how easy they were to use, and best of all, how quickly my daughter's persistent rash cleared up. I went on a shopping spree and bought our very first "stash" of cloth diapers. Fast forward a few months. Our bookstore was not doing well and working very long hours wasn't conducive to being the parents we wanted to be. Taking our entrepreneurial spirit in a new direction, I opened a small online diaper store. Over the next year, it grew steadily and we knew our future was in diapers! In 2006, we closed our bookstore and bought a new company...a tiny diaper company named Knickernappies. It came with an excellent reputation and a handful of patterns. We re-opened in October 2006 and introduced Knickernappies to the world through a small network of retailers. Over the next several years, we improved on the original patterns, introduced the OneSize diaper, and added lots of accessories. Our exclusive LoopyDo and SuperDo inserts, created out of our own need for trim, but absorbent, inserts for our daughter, became bestsellers and today are ranked #1 and #2 on Diaper Pin in the insert category. Today, my husband Shannon and I work together to bring you the best quality diapers and accessories. We still work from home, though now we have a custom-built garage that we use as our warehouse. All of our diapers, inserts, and sewn products are produced right here in Oregon. In fact, everything that Knickernappies sells is made in the USA! On a personal note, my husband and I have been married for over 10 years. Our daughter, Camille, was born in 2005 and has been cloth diapered since she was 8 weeks old. Our son, Colby, was born in June 2010 and he's been cloth diapered since birth. We've tried a variety of diapers, from pockets to all-in-ones to prefolds. We've dealt with leaks, detergent buildup, fit issues, and concerns about ease of use. What we sell in our store is a direct product of our experiences with our children. Simply put: We only sell what we use and love for our own babies. If it's in our store, then it's also in our home.
